“Daddy, are we there yet?” “How many more towns before we get there?”Two questions common to families that speak to human impatience. In time, riding in the car on a long trip will end. In time, a broken heart will heal.Seasons pass. As we continue our quest for godly wisdom, it’s important to remember that our Creator arranged for humans to experience seasons. He uses seasons in our life to help us. Maybe we can embrace this truth.
When I decided to retire, I wanted to move to a place that experienced a variety of weather changes, or seasons. We all have our favorite season. My favorite seasons are Spring and Fall. I could do without Summer and after one snow fall, I could do without Winter. But, God made seasons for us to enjoy. It is good for us to consider how seasons of life affect us.
A very wise man once said, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” He went on to say, “A time to be born and a time to die.” To me, God is saying that the major things of life follow a seasonal pattern. They give us some major boundaries that support our way of life. But, it is also good to know that God allows us to experience seasons for things that are more personal. For instance, “… a time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance…”. Yes, He is there with us in our crying and grieving.
I’ve lived in a number of places where the locals would say something like,“If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes and it will change.”Seasons, however, are more than small, quick changes in life. When we’re young, a family move may mark a new season. A break-up with a boyfriend or girlfriend makes for a more emotional season of change.
Aging brings more seasonal challenges, too…”a time to keep and a time to throw away…”. I can personally attest to the difficulty of getting rid of things I’ll never use again. This season is as difficult as some of our younger seasons!
To answer the original question… no, we are not there yet. If we’re breathing, we’re changing and life continues to change. The best we can do is to recognize that nothing in this life is permanent except our Creator! We will continue to be confronted with the need to “adjust” in order to maintain balance.
Where are you living today? What season affects you? Understand that God knows you and He is fully aware of your “season.” Rest easy and know that for Christ followers, “all things work together for good for those who love God…”. Tears may be your lot in life right now, but “joy comes in the morning!” Blessings! JC
