We can’t put a price tag on the most important aspects of life. I can put a price on some of the more common things of life. For instance, I know what a dependable car is worth, what a well-built house is worth, and the value of a good job. But, some things you just can’t put a price on. Proverbs 22 says “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.” But, having a good name is one of those qualities that we desire but can’t buy!
Another and equally important personal quality to possess that we cannot put a price on is possessing and developing a positive attitude. I believe the mind is a battlefield where the urgings and temptings of evil vie for supremacy over sound thinking that results in goodness, rightness and purity. Our mindset (attitude) influences the outcome of so much! I find it interesting that the human mind has been described as, “sound”, “troubled”, “confused”, “logical”, “jumbled”, “purposeful”, “dirty”, “analytical”, “creative”, “artistic” and “lost”, among others. The human mind has tremendous potential when used properly and when used for good. And it has tremendous potential for harm if used for carnal purposes and evil.
In Philippians 4, the Bible says, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” The writer of this Scripture (Paul) understood the value of keeping a positive attitude.
If you can, think of a person you know that generally has a sour attitude. Sees every glass as half empty. Sees every challenge as traumatic. We all know someone like that. Now think of someone who you can generally count on to be a positive influence in practically all situations. Sees the glass half full and ready to make it overflow. This person doesn’t lose heart very easily but understands that right thinking and a positive outlook can change everything!
In Christ, our problems are opportunities to allow Jesus to shine through us. Big problems are really just big opportunities to see something special take place in our life. Miracles still happen you know! So, keep your head up and stay in touch with the Holy One who has all the power to change everything!
An additional note: I just heard about Dolly Parton’s death. She was a pretty successful and loved lady. Did you know that she is a shining example of developing a positive attitude? Besides having a fantastic career, she also developed the “Imagination Library” where her organization gives away millions of books to kids from birth to age 5. The very first book that a child receives from Dolly is… (You won’t believe it) “The Little Train That Could”! It is a book that teaches optimism, hard work, and perseverance!
