All people have a built-in desire to worship something or someone (even our self). Throughout time, man has consistently looked for help from something bigger than himself. Remote tribes of people, once discovered, have been shown to have worshiped anything from the sun, to cows, to a large mountain, even unseen “spirits.” It seems mankind is incomplete unless he can give himself to something bigger than himself.
Knowing we are “born to worship” should make us look closer at the possible object(s) of our worship. The Israeli king, Solomon, who is generally known as the wisest man who ever lived, struggled with the thought of how to live. He recognized God as being the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob… the God of Israel, but he didn’t know how to “live it out.” King Solomon wrote, “For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God.”
How do we know that who or what we worship is really what we want to worship? Do we intend to worship God of Heaven or are we actually worshipping something or someone else? It’s not very difficult to discover the center of our life. We can simply look at our schedules, our thoughts and our actions. Where do we spend our time, our money and our energies? Who or what is at the forefront of our decision-making? When we say we worship Jesus (God), do we try to emulate the life of Jesus? Do we spend time pursuing the object of our worship?
As kids, we were taught to do certain things and our worship “need” would be fulfilled…like, going to church and reading the Bible. Of course, we should be involved in church and we should read the Bible. but the heart of man requires more. The heart of man has a “God-shaped void” that remains empty until we open ourself to Him. In addition to believing in God, Solomon pursued pleasure, fame, wealth and many other attractive things in hope of satisfaction.
It is practically impossible to go through our activities of school, work, friendships and family and have religious activity on our mind, at the same time. However, it is possible to place God, His Son and His Spirit in the center of all our pursuits and place our relationship with Him in the highest position in life. Giving God the highest honor and highest concern allows us to “worship” Him and also be able to live a life pleasing to Him, while successfully living a “normal” life.
Of all the religions of the world (and there are many), the only one that shows us how God loved us so much that He sacrificed His life so that our sins could be wiped away, is Christianity. The only faith that is given to us freely (by God’s grace) is Christianity. All others require us to “do” something to be accepted. But, in Jesus Christ, God says, “Here, believe in my Son and you will part of my intimate family.” That is called grace and that is what allows us to live positive lives of love and joy, and to be assured of eternal life!
My wisdom advice today is this… Believe and trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God for your eternal soul. Believe that He gave His all for you. Your life will be better than ever, your service to others will be more rewarding, and you will reserve your place in heaven!
