Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord my Strength and my Redeemer.”

There is one particular part of our body that has the greatest potential for producing good, but also for producing bad (evil).  Maybe you know already what it is.  It’s our tongue.  The Bible says that the tongue (that is, our ability to speak) is extremely powerful.  Yes, the tongue is possibly the strongest muscle of our entire body, but what God wants us to know is that our speech has the power to make or break an individual.  It has the power to bless and to curse.  That it can make a person’s day and ruin a person’s day… or even ruin a person’s life!

Have you wondered why God would create us with two ears and only one mouth (tongue)?  Could it be that He wants us to listen more than He wants us to speak?  I think we all have experienced the troublesome side of speech by saying things that either hurt, discourage, destroy relationships, or offend.  We probably also have experienced the joy of encouraging others, and lifting up someone who is down.

A very wise man said, “Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity. “ He also said, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

One of the most descriptive statements about talking that I enjoy is this proverb, “People may think you to be a fool, but when you open your mouth, it removes all doubt.”  In other words, be quick to listen and slow to speak.

Here’s a little nugget of wisdom… If in doubt, don’t say it.  It is true that whatever is in your heart will come out through your speech.  So keep your heart in good shape and the affects of your speech will follow.  Do you know why some are happy to see you come and some are happy to see you leave?  It’s because of your heart and your attitude… revealed by your words.

I pray for you reading this note that your words would bring good to others and honor to your Creator!
